Cpl. Wilbye Whittaker DFM
Medals L to R: DFM, 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal
My father was Cpl. Wilbye Whittaker DFM of 223 Coy RASC. He was one of the Despatchers who took part in the Arnhem operations in September 1944. He was awarded the DFM for his actions during a supply drop. He later had to account for the loss of his parachute which he had torn up to use for tourniquets during the vain fight to save the life of his friend, Driver H Davis (Bert)!
